How Serious Is Your Chinese Brochure? 中文宣传材料做的够认真吗?

When we talk about the best way to meet distributors is to go to exhibitions.
当我们在探讨对接经销商的最佳方式时,参加会展是不错的选择。

WKI happened to attended quite a few exhibitions with foreign brands looking to sell to China. Before the pandemic hit the world so hard, those exhibitions were always crowded with a lot of attendants, a lot of promotion materials, brochures, samples and gift bags.
WKI参加过许多相关会展,一般都有许多外商品牌想要拓展中国市场。在疫情扩散全球之前,这些会展总是人潮汹涌,有许多会展资料,宣传册,样品和礼品包。
 
When reading over the materials, bad translations and mistakes can always make one laugh.
当阅读浏览这些材料的时候,糟糕的翻译和错误总能博人一笑。
 
Let’s have a look of some typical example
  我们来看一些典型:
 
  1. “Oatmeal bar” was translated into “燕麦酒吧”, meaning the bar for drinks when it should be “燕麦棒”
 
  2. Mistakes in the contact information, the email address. 联系方式错误,电子邮件地址错误
 
  3. More than 3 or 4 different fonts or/and sizes of Chinese characters in one page. 在同一个页面出现3到4种不同的中文字体
 
Usually the English version comes with good design and presentation with detail info. look all professional. But the Chinese version gives out the impression that you are not taking the language, or the market seriously enough to get the translation correct.
通常情况下英文版本都有良好的设计和展示,看起来很专业。但是中文版本总是给人没有认真对待中文,或者中国市场的感觉。毕竟连翻译都做不对能有多认真呢?

When outsourcing translation to translators, always find a third party editor to check, it is vital to have a second eye to see the mistakes.
在外包翻译工作的同时,找第三方来做编辑和确认,有第二双眼睛看一下单一是非常重要的。
 
If you cannot find trustworthy translator, it is better to use the English version, or the one in your original language. I assume that any brand who is looking for any international exposure would have a good English presentation.
如果你发现找到值得信赖的翻译很难,那么最好使用英文版本,或者本国语言的版本。当然我们认为任何想要寻求海外发展的品牌都需要至少把英文版本的宣传材料做好。
 
Keep the translation partial. Anyone who go to the exhibition with an intention to do international business have enough English skill to understand the basic.
使用部分翻译。任何去参加类似会展做国际贸易的人都具备一定基础的英文能力。
 
1. Don’t translate brand name unless you have already registered trademark in China, 不要翻译品牌名称,除非你已经在中国注册了中文商标。
 
2. Don’t translate address overseas, doesn’t make any sense. 不要翻译海外地址,在实际中并没有用途。
 
3. Do not make a pure Chinese version. A bilingual one is better as even the translator make some mistake, we can still easily get reference. 不要做纯中文版本。双语版本是更佳的选择,因为即使翻译出错,我们能很快找到对照。
 
Another important aspect, the font of the character. The Chinese character looks like pictures, maybe change of the font won’t seem much difference to non-Chinese users, but using different fonts in one page is unusual. When try to highlight certain points, changing font is not the always the best choice.
另一个重要方面,中文字体。中文文字看起来像一幅幅图画,可能改变字体对非中文使用者来说并看不出任何不同,但是在一页中使用不同字体是很不常见的。当需要划重点的时候,改变字体一般不是最好的选择。
The suggestions listed above are based on real cases. We have been promoting the idea of comprehensive presentation as key to attract distributors over the years. If you are not an international famous brand with customer awareness already exiting in China, this poorly translated and formatted brochures and promotion materials can be deadly in the eyes of potential buyers. Simple logic, when you don’t even care about making the printout perfect, how seriously engaged will you be in when it comes to money and product exchange into serious large amount
